What is Psychotherapy?

We will all experience challenges in our life. Sometimes they will be life altering and at other times they will feel like small annoyances that just seem to get in the way of living optimally. No matter the reason, a Psychotherapist is a skilled health professional who has done extensive training in understanding the complexity of the human mind, its functioning as well as your early childhood socialization that predisposes you to challenges. They have specialized in effective treatment approaches that are rigorously researched.

An experienced Psychotherapist is equipped to assess your mental status, determine your thought patterns and consider how your past family or personal history is contributing to your issues. They are trained to understand immediate crisis needs versus longer term treatment of underlying difficulties. They do not offer advice or tell you what to do, but they do know how to ask the right questions for you to find your own way. Psychotherapy is a safe place where there is no judgement. A psychotherapist provides you a holding space for whatever you are going through. Once you have developed a rapport with your therapist they can even challenge you to see how your interpretations of reality may be skewed and teach you how to problem solve through dysfunctional thinking.

Most importantly, all the research shows that effective therapy is all about the relationship you have with your therapist. It is important that you feel comfortable, respected and understood.
